Mangalore University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Malabar Cancer Centre (MCC), which is a Postgraduate Institute of Oncology Sciences and Research and an autonomous institution under the Government of Kerala, Thalassery, to impart quality education and training, conduct joint collaborative research, undertake multi-centric research projects, and promote inter-institutional cooperation.
Both institutions will jointly develop and foster education, training, research & professional activities, including student and faculty-led projects.
The MoU was signed in the university on Thursday in the presence of B. Satheesan, Director, MCC, P.L. Dharma, Vice-Chancellor, Mangalore University; Raju Mogaveera, Registrar (administration) of the university and Karunakara Naregundi, Coordinator, Medical Physics Division at the university.
Mangalore University is the only State university in Karnataka to offer a postgraduate programme in Medical Physics. MCC is an apex cancer treatment and research centre that places equal emphasis on clinical care, education, and oncology research, a release from the university said on Friday.
Mangalore University started a postgraduate course in Medical Physics (M. Sc. in Medical Physics) in 2018. The teaching programmes of this course require the infrastructural facilities and professional expertise available at neighbouring medical institutions for conducting practical classes, teaching specialised course content, training through hospital postings, and internship programmes.
The MCC has advanced diagnostic facilities, including CT/MRI/PET/SPECT, and treatment facilities, including Linear Accelerator/Brachytherapy systems, and is recognised by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) for training Medical Physics students during their one-year internship programme. The facilities and the expertise available at MCC are immensely beneficial for the teaching and training of Medical Physics students and researchers at Mangalore University. The MCC has been extending internship opportunities to students in the Medical Physics programme at Mangalore University.
The fields of cooperation as per the MoU include extending facilities available with both institutions for each other’s students’ training, conducting practical classes and deputation of students as observers, providing training for the MSc Medical Physics students of the university using the advanced radiotherapy instruments available at MCC.
The objectives of the MoU also include providing internship placement at MCC for the Medical Physics students of the university, exchange of faculty members for lectures, talks, conferences, seminars, symposia and sharing of ideas for enrichment of academic programme offerings of either institute.
