A disquiet?

U.S. President Donald Trump revels in keeping global leaders guessing which he backs by issuing unpredictable diktats on all. But he appears to have met his match in Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Israel’s leader Benjamin Netanyahu, who have turned Mr. Trump’s unpredictability to their advantage. Mr. Putin remains inscrutable. Every claim of progress on peace by Mr. Trump is responded with increased shelling on Ukraine . Mr. Xi, the great economic rival, counters every Trump diktat with a subtle throttling of vital supplies while Mr. Netanyahu, the closest ally, is too adamant to follow advice. Back home, unease seems to be brewing. Clearly, America’s democratic patience is being tested by fatigue and polarisation.

It might be inevitable that Mr. Trump’s macho and larger-than-life image could now be challenged from within the United States.

Pan-India SIR

It is reported that the Election Commission’s pan-India Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls could begin soon. We know how the exercise in poll-bound Bihar caused much controversy. As the exercise now will also be in Opposition-ruled States, utmost care should be taken to ensure a transparent exercise.

Tharcius S. Fernando,
