Motorists complain of inconvenience caused by condition of Kakkan Main Road in Adambakkam

Kakkan Main Road is the main link road for several residential areas of West Velachery, Adambakkam and Vanuvampet, to Anna Salai through the Race Course Road of Guindy. The motorists of West Velachery and Adambakkam depend on this arterial road to reach the city.

The stretch of the bus route road, which was in good condition until recently, was dug up a few weeks ago by Chennai Metrowater for maintenance work, leading to the road becoming unmotorable.

While the residents of Velachery have the option of the old main road as well as the bypass road to reach Anna Salai, hundreds of motorists of west Velachery and Adambakkam have to use this narrow arterial road. With the road dug up for maintenance work the motorists have been suffering despite the officials of the Chennai Corporation taking up restoration of the road.

R. Amaresh, a resident of AGS Colony in West Velachery, said the middle of the road has been dug up and motorists are facing severe inconvenience navigating the stretch, as the road is also used by Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses. He wanted the Corporation officials to patch up the road at the earliest.

Residents and motorists of the locality rued that the Corporation officials could have postponed permission for digging up the road by a few months, knowing well that the northeast monsoon is imminent. The road, being located adjacent to the Velachery Lake, normally gets flooded during heavy rains.

The road has been dug up for underground drainage main pipeline work, and permission was already sought for this, said a local official of GCC. “If the pipeline is left unrepaired, that will also cause issues for the people living on the stretch and nearby. So the road was cut open, and work was started. It will be done in the next few days and will be patched up with cement concrete,” he added.

However, since rains have already started, residents are not hopeful of an early resolution.
