Emergencies handled by the 108 ambulances in Coimbatore region, comprising 12 districts, saw 56.36 % increase on Deepavali day, mainly due to a significant rise in road traffic accidents.
As per data from EMRI Green Health Services (GHS), which operates 108 ambulances in the State under the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project, its fleet of ambulances handled a total of 2,336 emergencies on Deepavali day as against an average of 1,494 emergencies on normal days.
Among the total number of emergencies on Deepavali day, 831 were related to road traffic accidents whereas the average number of such cases handled on normal days was 225. Other types of emergencies that saw significant rise on Deepavali day, when compared with normal days, were: assault 221 (69), fire/burns 71 (23), unconscious cases 179 (48) and non-vehicular trauma 216 (116).
A total of 424 ambulances, including first responders, are being operated in Coimbatore region comprising Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Tiruppur, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Karur and Tiruchi districts under the supervision of S. Jayakumar, Regional Manager, EMRI GHS.
50.64 % jump in Coimbatore district
All the emergencies handled in Coimbatore district on Deepavali day stood at 348, registering a 50.64 % jump from an average of 231 emergencies on normal days. Road traffic accident related emergencies handled in the district on Deepavali day were 126 as against 42 on normal days.
Coimbatore tops in assault cases
Ganesh G., Programme Manager of EMRI GHS for Coimbatore and the Nilgiris, said the 33 emergencies related to assault cases handled by 108 ambulances in Coimbatore district was the highest in the State on Deepavali day. The average number of assault cases handled in the district on a normal day is three.
There were nine cases of fire/burns related emergencies handled by 108 ambulances on Deepavali day, including that of a three-year-old child from Sulur, who suffered burns on chest caused by fireworks.
Statewide, 108 ambulances handled 7,463 emergencies on Deepavali day as against an average of 5,051 on normal days.
