The police have arrested five persons of a gang that robbed a Theni native of ₹50 lakh near Perur in Coimbatore district on October 18.
The Perur police were on the lookout for the gang after M. Vijay, 26, of Cumbum in Theni district lodged a complaint, alleging that more than 10 persons robbed him of the money near Madhampatty.
The police formed a special team, which arrested S. Alagupandi, 31, V. Gobi, 28, and V. Murugan alias Kutti, 27, all from LKP Nagar at Sakkimangalam in Madurai district, from their native on October 19. The police recovered ₹2.51 lakh from the accused, who were remanded in judicial custody in the Coimbatore Central Prison the next day.
The special team further arrested Arun Kumar, 25, and Muthutamil Maran,19, residents of Arasanoor near Thiruppuvanam in Sivagangai district, from Chennai on Wednesday. The police recovered ₹15,000 from them. They were also remanded on Thursday.
The police said Mr. Vijay had got acquainted with one Dharma of Madurai when they served prison term together in Theni five years ago. Dharma contacted him on Instagram four months ago and informed that one of his acquaintances could arrange 200 sovereigns of old gold ornaments for ₹50 lakh. Mr. Vijay arranged the money and came to Coimbatore along with his brother-in-law Pandeeswaran on October 18.
Mr. Vijay told the police that a group of over 10 men attacked him, Dharma and another person near Madhampatty, when they were heading a place to buy the promised gold. The police are on the lookout for the remaining accused.
