Five fishermen from Chellanam rescued

Five fishermen from Chellanam, who were stranded in the sea after their boat developed engine failure, were rescued by their counterparts from Colachel on Friday evening (October 24).

The Coastal Police said the Kerala fishermen were safe. The five, who are natives of Kandakkadavu in Chellanam, were brought to the shore late in the night. They had ventured into the sea on a boat named Emmanuel around 4.30 a.m. Their family members raised an alarm after they failed to return until Friday afternoon. They usually returned to the shore around 9 a.m.

The Coastal Police said a search operation was launched to trace the missing fishermen as efforts to contact them over mobile phones failed to yield results. After the boat developed engine failure, it started drifting in the sea. The other fishermen, who had ventured along with them from the Chellanam coast, could not realise that they were stranded, as the weather remained rough. They also returned early following the rough sea condition. The fishermen from Colachel, who were on board a boat named Nadhan, spotted them and initiated rescue measures, they said.
