Govt. steps up efforts for safe return of Vizianagaram fishermen from Bangladesh

The Government of Andhra Pradesh accelerated its efforts to secure the safe return of the eight fishermen from Vizianagaram district who had been detained by the Bangladesh Coast Guard after their fishing vessel “inadvertently strayed into their waters,” an official release said on Thursday.

The government took up the issue with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and reached out to the Joint Secretary in the MEA, B. Shyam, to monitor the progress, the release added.

With a charge-sheet being filed against the fishermen in Bangladesh, a special legal team was constituted by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka for providing them legal aid and to ensure their release. The State government appealed to the Bangladesh Embassy to extend its cooperation on the issue.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of Civil Aviation K. Rammohan Naidu spoke about the issue with Union Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar. Minister of MSME and NRI Affairs Kondapalli Srinivas tried to speak with the fishermen through a satellite phone.

Vizianagaram Revenue Divisional Officer D. Keerthi met a few affected families in Visakhapatnam, and explained them the government’s efforts in securing the release of their dear ones.
