Man dies after police inquiry in monetary dispute case in Poonamallee

A man who was questioned in connection with a monetary dispute at the Poonamallee police station collapsed and died shortly after leaving the station on Friday (October 24, 2025).

The deceased, Murugan, 40, a resident of Avadi, was an autorickshaw driver. He was married and had two children. A few years ago, when Murugan was living in a rented house in Maran Nagar, Poonamallee, he reportedly borrowed ₹6.40 lakh on interest from a woman named Sasikala.

Police sources said as Murugan allegedly failed to repay the money, Sasikala went to his house demanding repayment. There, Murugan’s brother-in-law Karthik, 30, allegedly verbally abused her. Following this, Sasikala lodged a complaint at the Poonamallee police station against both Murugan and Karthik.

The police summoned both of them for inquiry on Friday, and they reportedly reached the station at around 10.30 a.m. The inquiry went on until about 8 p.m., after which they were allowed to leave. While returning home in an autorickshaw, Murugan suddenly collapsed near Karaiyanchavadi.

He was immediately rushed to the Poonamallee Government Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The police were informed, and officers arrived at the hospital. Murugan’s relatives, who alleged that police interrogation had led to his death, got into a heated argument with the officers.

The police, however, maintained that Murugan and Karthik were called solely for inquiry regarding the money-lending dispute and were allowed to leave after questioning.
