Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Srinivas Poojary on Thursday, October 23, directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to send a proposal to construct a flyover/ vehicular overpass (VoP) at Sangam Circle on Kochi-Panvel National Highway 66 in Kundapura Town.
He was holding a meeting with NHAI officials and Kundapura MLA A. Kiran Kumar Kodgi on the pathetic condition of service roads and the Sangam Circle abutting NH 66 between KSRTC Bus Stand and Panchagangavali Bridge, at the MLA’s office in Kundapura. The MP said he would also write to the Union Road Transport Ministry as well as the NHAI highlighting the immediate need for a flyover/ VoP at Sangam Circle.
Meanwhile, the MP also directed the NHAI to immediately construct service roads between KSRTC Bus Stand and the Panchagangavali Bridge, absence of which has been causing severe hardship to road users, said Mr. Kodgi in a statement here.
The MP regretted that with vehicles from five directions converging at Sangam Circle, the area has been witnessing numerous accidents. As many as nine people have died in accidents at the Circle since the four-lane highway was commissioned a few years ago. As such, there was an immediate need for a flyover/ VoP at the Circle, the MP and the MLA told NHAI officials.
They also directed NHAI to construct service roads and install high-mast street lights along the stretch on priority. Because of the absence of service roads and rainwater drainage, flooding would occur near APMC even for a small amount of rain, they noted.
Kundapura Town Municipal Council Chief Officer G. Anand, TMC president Mohandas Shenoy and other were present.
