DCP (South-East) of Hyderabad S. Chaitanya Kumar opened fire with his service weapon on a rowdy sheeter involved in mobile phone snatching cases after the suspect allegedly attempted to attack a police constable with a knife at Victory Playground in Chaderghat on Saturday (October 25) evening. The offender sustained bullet injuries to his hand and stomach and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar said that around 5 p.m., the DCP and his gunmen were passing the area when they noticed the suspect, later identified as Mohd. Omar Ansari, trying to escape after he allegedly snatched a phone. “When the officers tried to apprehend him, Ansari attacked one of the constables with a knife, prompting the DCP to fire two rounds in a bid to stop him from injuring the policeman,” the officer said.

In the ensuing commotion, the DCP and his gunmen also sustained minor internal injuries. “They were also taken to a private hospital for medical care. Their condition is said to be stable. Meanwhile, another man who was accompanying Ansari managed to escape from the scene,” the City Police Commissioner said.

The police said that Ansari, a resident of Kamatipura, is a known rowdy sheeter with a record at the Kalapather Police Station. He has been involved in 20 offences, including cases of extortion and property crimes, and is known to use weapons during his activities. The Preventive Detention Act had been invoked against him twice in the past.

Preliminary investigation suggests that Ansari may have visited the playground to plan another offence when he was spotted by the DCP and his team, who were passing by the area. Police have deployed special teams to trace his associate who fled the scene.

Officials said the DCP’s action was taken under compelling circumstances to protect his team from harm. The CLUES team has been pressed into service to reconstruct the sequence of events and verify the details of the incident.
