Southern Railway General Manager R.N. Singh on Thursday asked officials concerned to make provisions for additional tracks at Mangaluru Central to cater to future increase in traffic and to ensure more efficient train operations.
The directions were issued during his inspection of the infrastructure and passenger amenities at the station. Along with the ongoing redevelopment works at the station, these additional facilities should be provided, the GM said.
Kozhikode and Mangaluru Central are being developed as world-class stations, while Kannur, Kasaragod, Mangaluru Junction and Shoranur Junction are progressing under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to enhance passenger amenities and station infrastructure.
During the day, Mr. Singh conducted a detailed inspection of major station redevelopment and infrastructure works in Palakkad division, covering key locations along the Kozhikode – Mangaluru section. The inspection began at Kozhikode, which is being redeveloped as a world-class station at an estimated cost of ₹472.96 crore. He reviewed the progress of ongoing works and noted that the project is progressing rapidly. He advised to expedite the competition within the scheduled time.
Mr. Singh then carried out a sectional inspection from Kozhikode to Mangaluru Junction, assessing track conditions, bridges, signalling systems, and passenger amenities en route. The inspection also covered the redevelopment works at Kannur, Kasaragod, and Mangaluru Junction.
At Vadakara, he instructed officials to explore the feasibility of developing a new parking facility at the second entrance to enhance passenger convenience. Mr. Singh suggested certain alternations in the circulation area to improve passenger movement and overall station layout at Kannur station where redevelopment work is under progress at a cost of ₹35.63 crore. He was told 75% of the redevelopment work valued at ₹32.69 crore is complete at Kasargod station while 97% of the work is complete at Mangaluru Junction, valued at ₹19.62 crore.
