Thanneerpalli Sri Krishnan Swamy said in a discourse that people can be divided into three types: Theists, Atheists, and Theist-cum-Atheists. Theists believe in the existence of God, rebirth, and similar ideas. They think God helps in distress and remain humble in happiness. Atheists, the second category, do not believe in God and think events happen only by nature. They focus on reality, may believe people should stay as they are, and aim for the welfare of society. The last group believes in God but not in the Sastras, Vedantas, or other codes. They think the mind alone is enough for one’s actions.
Tiruvalluvar says only those who attain the divine feet of God can be free from sorrows (Thanakku Uvamai Illadhan — Kural 7). Worldly desires are impermanent. Yet, our lives are filled with desires, which are the root cause of sorrows. Only the blessings of God are permanent. If people develop the thought that God exists, their worries and sorrows will lessen. The soul, also called life air or atma, is permanent. It dwells in our physical body, which is perishable. Just as the self with a body passes through childhood, youth, and old age, it passes into another body after death. A wise man is not deluded by that (Gita — chapter 2, verse 13). The soul acts according to the deeds of previous births. The physical body contains Sattva, Rajas, and Tamo gunas in different amounts for each person. This is why people find it hard to understand God’s attributes.
Nammazhwar says it is hard to understand the divinity of God, who is Omniscient and Omnipresent. God is the one who guides us all. Our deeds are obstacles to reaching Him. Lord Krishna advises us to surrender at His feet and leave everything. He promises to free us from all bonds (Sarva Dharman Parityajya).
