A few days of rain have led to potholes and craters developing on several roads in Chennai, including the Velachery-Tambaram Road, Sardar Patel Road, Rajiv Gandhi Salai, Anna Salai, and Gandhi Mandapam Road.
On the Velachery-Tambaram Road, the condition is particularly bad in a few sections, with the worst stretch in the Narayanapuram area of Pallikaranai. Traffic slows down considerably even under normal conditions on this stretch, as it is narrower compared to the rest of the much wider six-lane road.
Many residents had taken to X complaining about the status of the road. “From “Bad” to “Worse” Whole pallikaranai roads looks like a cement factory !! Traffic advice: Bikers be very cautious while driving from Sengeniamman temple to Narayanapuram signal. @chennai_Highway @chennaicorp @kgbias Sun is shining kindly take immediate steps to solve this,” said an X user.
“It is an awful 100 – 200 metres. Some kind of repair was attempted but that did not work. Instead pot holes only developed. The State highways department should have taken up work before the monsoon set. They waited for too long. Since Wednesday is also a holiday for schools and colleges, they could still take up work here,” said Vidyasagar Jagadeesan, a resident of Pallikaranai.
At the curve near the Pallikaranai Oil Mills, the road has several potholes, and traffic slows down here as well to navigate around them. The top layer of the road has buckled near the Medavakkam flyover, making vehicle movement difficult.
On Sardar Patel Road, the stretch beyond the under-construction Madhya Kailash flyover has developed large potholes. On Gandhi Mandapam Road, a section near the new Tantea shop has craters. “When the whole road is under water, we cannot see where the holes are. My car just sank into one and came back up as we took the extreme lane. Some EB work was carried out recently, after which the spot was not properly restored,” said Selvaraj, who commutes via Sardar Patel Road and Gandhi Mandapam Road.
