Movement of vehicles got disrupted near Indira Gandhi Square during morning hours of Wednesday due to water-logging caused by overnight rain in Puducherry.

Vehicles found it difficult to cross the four-way junction as a result of minor inundation in the area that lasted for several hours. Two-wheeler riders and pedestrians were the most-affected.

“Water started receding only around 11 a.m. on Wednesday. The issue of water-logging in the IG square is a recurring problem during every monsoon. The authorities have to find a lasting solution to the stagnation problem in the area,” said a shop owner at the junction.

Following reports of water-logging, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy inspected the Indira Gandhi Square area and directed the officials to drain out the water expeditiously. While speaking to media persons, he said that water flowing from Kanakan lake caused the water stagnation in the locality.

“I have asked the Public Works Department to find a permanent solution to water-logging in the area. Also, minor inundation was reported in other parts of the town. The officials were asked to rectify inundation problems in all low-lying areas. The government has asked the Agriculture Department officials to visit rural areas to ascertain whether there was any damage to crops,” he said.
