The Perambalur District Monitoring Officer / Commissioner for Welfare of the Differently Abled M. Lakshmi on Wednesday said that temporary relief centres had been identified at 63 places all over the district to accommodate people affected by the widespread rain under the influence of the northeast monsoon. The relief centres are to function in schools, community halls and marriage halls.
Presiding over a meeting attended by officials of all government departments at the District Collectorate here to discuss the precautionary steps to be taken in view of the onset of the northeast monsoon, Ms. Lakshmi called upon the officials concerned to keep a continuous watch on tanks, lakes and other water bodies in the district. The officials should also ensure that the bunds of the tanks and other water bodies were strong and submit a report in this regard.
Eight places including V. Kalathur, Thiruvalanthurai, Agaramsigur, Keezhaperambalur and Vayalapadi have been identified as vulnerable, she said and instructed the officials to work with extra caution at these places. The Tahsildars and Block Development Officers should ensure that basic facilities were available at the temporary relief centres to accommodate the affected people, an official release said.
Necessary equipment and manpower should be kept in a state of readiness to remove the trees which get uprooted and fall on the road blocking vehicular movements. Adequate sandbags and backhoe loaders should also be ensured by the officials. Medical camps should be conducted in places where they are required, Ms. Lakshmi said.
