Birth anniversary of freedom fighter M.A. Eswaran observed

The birth anniversary of M.A. Eswaran, a freedom fighter, and MLA from 1946 to 1952, who conceived the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) system, was observed here on Saturday.

Minister for Housing, Prohibition and Excise, S. Muthusamy, in the presence of Collector S. Kandasamy, Rajya Sabha MP Anthiyur P. Selvaraj, MP K.E. Prakash, and MLAs A.G. Venkatachalam and V.C. Chandhirakumar, garlanded the statue of the freedom fighter at Bhavanisagar Dam.

Born on October 25, 1895, Eswaran took part in the freedom struggle and spent 16 years in prison. He was later elected from the Erode General Rural Constituency to the Madras Presidency Legislative Assembly and was instrumental in implementing the LBP system, which irrigates 2.07 lakh acres in the districts of Erode, Karur, and Tiruppur. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had announced the installation of a statue and the construction of a memorial in his honour, at a total cost of ₹3.04 crore.
