Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments and Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority Chairman P.K. Sekarbabu inspected desilting work in the Buckingham Canal in Royapuram Zone, to ensure smooth flow of rainwater.
According to a press release, the Minister also reviewed rain preparedness and sanitation measures in the area and interacted with residents to identify local needs. In Royapuram Zone, about 1.2 km of the Buckingham Canal was being desilted.
Mayor R. Priya told reporters that pre-monsoon preventive work was under way across the city and that about 6cm of rainfall was recorded during Deepavali, and officials were conducting zonal reviews with legislators and councillors.
As many as 2,000 road locations with potholes had been identified and repairs were ongoing. Further, 206 low-lying areas were identified, where 100 HP motor pumps had been installed.
Relief centres were being arranged with food, bedding and medical facilities. With upgraded stormwater drains, Chennai could now drain up to 15 cm of rainfall immediately, with additional pumps to be used during heavy downpours, she said.
