With the water level in the Bhavanisagar Dam reaching 102 feet against its full reservoir level (FRL) of 105 feet, surplus water was released into the Bhavani River on Tuesday (October 21, 2025).

As per flood regulation norms, the permissible storage levels at the dam vary by month — 100 feet during June and July, 102 feet from August to October, and up to 105 feet in November and December.

At 4 a.m. on Tuesday, the water level touched 102 feet, prompting the release of 8,500 cusecs of surplus water into the river. The inflow was recorded at 9,500 cusecs while the storage stood at 30.31 tmc ft., against the full capacity of 32.80 tmc ft.

The discharge into the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) canal was 1,000 cusecs, while there was no discharge into the Kalingarayan canal or the Arakkankottai and Thadapalli canals.

A Water Resources Department official from the Bhavanisagar sub-division said that in view of the anticipated heavy inflow due to the Northeast monsoon, a flood warning has been issued to residents living along the riverbanks and in low-lying areas. People have been advised to move to safer places, and precautionary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of lives and property.

Meanwhile, bathing has been banned at the Kodiveri anicut across the Bhavani River following reports of flooding due to the surplus discharge. The anicut, located about 15 km from Gobichettipalayam on the Sathyamangalam Road, is a popular tourist spot that attracts visitors from across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring States.
