The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) on Tuesday (October 21, 2025) registered a suo motu case regarding the ‘encounter death’ of Sheikh Riyaz, based on a newspaper report.
The case relates to the recent arrest of the deceased in connection with the murder of police constable M. Pramod Kumar. Reports allege that Sheikh Riyaz attempted to snatch the weapon of a Armed Reserve constable and tried to escape, prompting police to fire in self-defence, which resulted in his immediate death.
The Commission has directed the Telangana Director General of Police to submit details of the circumstances leading to the incident, any magisterial or judicial inquiry conducted, and confirmation that the ‘encounter’ complied with Supreme Court and National Human Rights Commission NHRC guidelines. Copies of the FIR and postmortem report are to be submitted by November 24, 2025.
