About 50 cadres of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) in Dindigul district on Tuesday helped conservancy workers clear the garbage which had accumulated during Deepavali celebration.

The Corporation Health Department removed the waste from all the zones. Apart from the workers, private vehicles were engaged to carry waste to the dumping ground.

As the garbage volume was huge than the normal times, the DYFI members assisted the conservancy workers in commercial locations. At Manikoondu and in Bazaar streets, they helped the workers in clearing the garbage.

Appreciating the volunteers, Dindigul MP Sachidanandam said with the manpower shortage in the Health Department, the conservancy workers alone might not be able to clear such huge piles of garbage. The DYFI cadres had shown an example of togetherness with the civic administration, he said.

He also thanked a few of the business houses and trade associations for responding to the call for assistance by the Dindigul Corporation authorities in clearing the garbage.

At least 15 people in the age group of 6 to 25 years suffered minor and multiple injuries while bursting crackers on the Deepavali day, fire officers said and added that the fire calls too were attended to, which were minor.

The injured persons were referred to the Government Hospital, where a few of them were kept for medical observation and others were treated as Out-Patients, doctors said.

Violation by residents

Though the government had appealed to the public to engage in bursting crackers for two hours – one hour each in the morning and evening, the people appeared to have neglected the instructions.

In many locations, the residents burst crackers even after the stipulated hours. With intermittent rain, the people stayed indoors and as and when it stopped, they burst crackers.

In many extension areas, the pollution level was very high that visibility was very poor.
