Two arrested for assaulting woman in Mylapore


Police arrested two men for allegedly assaulting a woman and threatening her not to allow her daughter to testify in a murder case in Mylapore.

According to police, Muniyammal, 55, of Gandhi Nagar, Mylapore, runs a flower shop on Bazaar Road. Her daughter Selvi’s husband, ‘Kizhangu’ Saravanan, a history-sheeter was murdered in Maduravoyal in 2023, and the trial in the case is currently on in court.

On Monday while Muniyammal was selling flowers, three men – Appun alias Syed Ali, who is an accused in the Kizhangu Saravanan murder case, along with his uncle Venkat and Ganapathi – approached her. They allegedly threatened her, saying that Selvi, a key witness in the murder case, should not appear in court to testify, and offered her money to comply. When she refused, they reportedly assaulted her, issued death threats, and fled the scene.

Based on Muniyammal’s complaint, the Mylapore Police registered a case and arrested two suspects — Venkat, 52, and his brother Ganapathi, 57, of Kannilal Street, Mylapore, Chennai. Police are continuing efforts to trace the absconding accused involved in the case.
