Country boat fishermen staged a demonstration in Thoothukudi, urging the authorities to complete the construction of groyne in Therespuram area.
In the demonstration, the fishermen pointed out that two sections of groynes had been constructed in Therespuram country boat fishing harbour in the previous DMK tenure. One section extending up to 1,050 metres was planned on the northern side, while the other was planned for 535 metres on the southern side. However, of the latter, only about 250 metres have been completed, leaving 285 metres unfinished due to lack of funds.
Because of the incomplete construction, boats are colliding with each other during rough weather, causing damage. As a result fishermen were forced to spend ₹40,000 per boat on repairs. They raised slogans and demanded that the remaining portion of the groyne be completed at the earliest.
The protest was organised by Therespuram fishermens’ association, the conch divers union and Therespuram small traders association.
Over 200 country boat fishermen participated in the protest along with other associations. Due to the protest and the prevailing weather warnings, all country boats in Therespuram area did not venture into sea.
