Family of murdered youth calls off protest following talks with Minister, officials

The relatives of the murdered youth who were protesting for the third consecutive day called off their agitation following talks with Minister for Co-operation K. R. Periakaruppan and officials here on Friday.

Shankar, 29, a travel agency owner from Kannamangalam near Ilayangudi, while travelling alone in his car on October 21 near Thayamangalam, was waylaid by unidentified youth and was later murdered at the same place following a dispute.

Subsequently, the deceased was taken to Sivaganga Government Hospital for post-mortem and the Ilayangudi police registered a case. As they kicked off the investigation immediately, police arrested four persons.

But the relatives of the victim demanded arrest of all those in connection with the murder. They started protesting and refused to accept the mortal remains of the youth from the hospital.

As part of the protest, the relatives blocked the Sivaganga district court entrance on the day of the murder and later in the following days, they marched in a procession to the Palace Gate and resumed their protest there.

The traffic in the locality was disturbed due to the protest.

As the tension escalated in the area for the third day, Minister for Co-operation K. R. Periakaruppan, District Collector K. Porkodi, Superintendent of Police R. Shiva Prasad, met the protesters and assured that the remaining culprits would be arrested immediately.

Mr. Periakaruppan handed over ₹10 lakh as relief to the family from his personal fund.
