Farmers seek better compensation for lands acquired for road project

Farmers in Dindigul district sought better compensation for lands being acquired for the ring road project in Dindigul. Though the district administration promised fair compensation, works were going on without compensating farmers, they said at the farmers grievances redress meeting held at the Collectorate.

At the meeting presided over by District Revenue Officer R. Jeyabharathi, the farmers urged the authorities to take necessary steps to prevent the discharge of sewage into waterbodies. They also complained about illegal sand quarrying. The authorities assured the farmers that the issues would be looked into and necessary action would be taken.

A section of farmers raised complaints about damage caused to crops by wild animals. They urged the Forest Department officials to take necessary steps. They also complained about illegally operating brick kilns.

With regard to compensation, the authorities told farmers that revaluation work was underway. Officials concerned would inspect brick kilns in order to ascertain as to whether they were operating as per the rules or violating them. Necessary action will be taken following the inspection, the authorities told the farmers.

The farmers also urged the authorities to ensure that agricultural lands received adequate water and there was sufficient supply of fertilizers.

THENI

At the farmers grievances redress meeting held in Theni, presided over by Collector Ranjeet Singh, the farmers sought adequate paddy procurement centres. The farmers complained about encroachments and sought their removal.

Steps must be taken to desilt and deepen waterbodies, they said. The farmers said medicines should be provided to people living in hill areas during monsoon. Proper road facilities should be provided to transport agricultural produce from their farmlands, they said. They also sought necessary action be taken against illegal quarries and to prevent discharge of sewage into agricultural lands.
