The Pazhavoor police have arrested a 16-year-old boy who fatally knocked down an old man and his granddaughter while driving his car on the busy Tirunelveli – Kanniyakumari National Highway.
Police said a speeding car hit a bike on the Tirunelveli – Kanniyakumari National Highway on Monday last in which 65-year-old Joseph of Vadakkankulam and his 6-year-old granddaughter were killed on the spot. The driver of the car, who allegedly caused the accident, did not stop the vehicle but had sped away.
When the Pazhavoor police started investigation, it was found that a 16-year-old boy from NGO Colony in Palayamkottai was behind the wheel when the accident occurred. Subsequently, the police nabbed the minor on Tuesday and he was lodged at the Government Observation Home.
Since the mother had allowed the juvenile, who did not have valid driving license, to manoeuvre the car, the Pazhavoor police also arrested her on Tuesday. She was remanded in judicial custody and has been lodged in Kokkirakulam Women’s Jail here.
Superintendent of Police N. Silambarasan said the police would register case against the parents who allow their minor children to ride bikes or drive cars. Since this violation of law would lead to fatal accidents, it would land the minors and their parents in serious trouble.
