A fresh low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring more rain until October 29 in Andhra Pradesh, and a yellow alert has been given for a few coastal and Rayalaseema districts.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Amaravati, an upper air cyclonic circulation, extending up to middle tropospheric levels, lies over southeast Bay of Bengal and South Andaman Sea.
Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over southeast and eastcentral Bay of Bengal on October 24 (Friday). It is likely to move west-northwestwards and become more marked during the subsequent 24 hours.
As a result, there will be heavy to very heavy rain in the State for the next seven days.
While there is a yellow alert for the districts of Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra Pradesh on October 24, 25 and 26, there is an orange alert for the districts of Krishna, Guntur, Bapatla, Prakasam, Nellore, Tirupati, Annamayya and Kadapa on October 27 and 28. There is a yellow alert again on October 29.
Meanwhile, Wednesday’s well-marked low-pressure area moved west-northwestwards and weakened into a low-pressure area over north interior Tamil Nadu and south interior Karnataka at 5.30 a.m. on Thursday. Later, it moved west-northwestwards and lay over south interior Karnataka and north Kerala at 11.30 a.m. It was likely to continue to move west-northwestwards across north Kerala and emerge over the east-central and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea during the next 24 hours, said an IMD bulletin at 5 p.m.
On Thursday, very heavy rainfall was concentrated in the districts of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema and West Godavari.
Between 8.30 a.m. and 6 p.m., Katrenikona in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema received the highest of 120 mm rainfall, followed by Ravulapalem in the same district at 92.25 mm. Narsapuram in West Godavari district received 85.5 mm. The districts of Nellore, Chittoor, Prakasam, Kakinada, Krishna also received around 50-70 mm rainfall. In Krishna district, schools were closed in view of the rainfall warnings. Rayalaseema districts received moderate rainfall of around 30-40 mm.
Minister of Home V. Anitha held a teleconference with the District Collectors in view of a fresh low pressure likely to form over the Bay of Bengal. She asked authorities of the A.P. State Disaster Management Authority to keep the District Collectors up to date with weather inputs. She asked officials to take all measures to avoid damages.
