More than 70 persons were injured while bursting crackers on the day of Deepavali in Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, and Tirupattur districts.
Health officials said that the injured persons were treated at government hospitals in these districts up to 7 a.m on Tuesday. Among the injured, many patients were treated for burns, eye injuries, and minor trauma resulting from firecracker mishaps.
Most of the incidents occured in thickly populated towns like Vellore, Arcot, Arakkonam, Cheyyar, and Tiruvannamalai due to crowds. “Nine persons including one child with around 40 % burns were treated at the hospital for cracker burns. Of this, six of them are men,” J. Usha Nandini, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Government Taluk Hospital, Walajah, told The Hindu.
Health officials said that the Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruvannamalai town has reported the highest number of 50 cracker burn cases as of 7 a.m on Tuesday, a day after Deepavali in the region. Of this, 25 patients including 12 children are treated as out-patients (OP). Among in-patients, the hospital has referred 12 of them to other government hospitals like Chengalpattu Government Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
The Vellore Government Medical College Hospital has treated nine patients including four out-patients. Except for a child, the rest of the treated patients were men. Emergency units at hospitals were kept ready for expected influx of patients due to the festival.
The Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department organised safety campaigns and awareness drives to minimize accidents. Police and civic officials had also advised residents to be cautious, use designated open spaces for fireworks, and supervise children while bursting crackers.
