Widespread moderate to heavy rainfall was reported across the delta districts of Tamil Nadu on Monday and Tuesday under the influence of the northeast monsoon, leading to waterlogging in several low-lying areas and inundation of paddy fields.
According to data from the regional weather offices, Nagapattinam district recorded an average rainfall of 5.6 cm between 6 a.m. on October 20 and 6 a.m. on October 21, with Velankanni receiving the highest rainfall of 8.4 cm and Thirukkuvalai the lowest at 3.4 cm. On Tuesday (October 21), between 8.30 a.m. and 6 p.m., the district recorded an additional 1.5 cm, with Nagapattinam town reporting 3.4 cm.
In Thanjavur district, rainfall ranged from light to heavy across parts of the region between Monday 8.30 a.m. and Tuesday 8.30 a.m. Ayyampettai in Papanasam taluk received the highest rainfall of 8 cm, while Thirukkattupalli in Budalur taluk recorded 1.3 cm.
Tiruvarur district received an average rainfall of 4 cm between Monday 6 a.m. and Tuesday 6 a.m., with Tiruvarur town recording a maximum of 6.9 cm and Muthupet the lowest at 1.5 cm. On Tuesday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Pandavaiyar Head recorded 2.7 cm, while Thiruthuraipoondi received 0.7 mm.
In Mayiladuthurai, heavy rainfall was recorded from Monday 8.30 a.m. to Tuesday 6.30 a.m., with the district averaging 4.6 cm. Sikali received the highest rainfall at 6.5 cm, and Tharangambadi the lowest at 2 cm. Between 8.30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, the district received an average of 2.3 cm, with Sembanar Koil reporting 3.4 cm and Tharangambadi 1.5 cm.
Pudukkottai district recorded an average rainfall of 6.34 cm between Monday and Tuesday 6 a.m., with Udalayipatti receiving 3 cm. Death of two cattle due to rain situation was reported.
Agricultural officials said the continuous rain had caused severe inundation in paddy fields across the delta, particularly in Tiruvarur district, where over 11,918 acres of paddy had been affected. Both kuruvai crops ready for harvest and newly transplanted samba crops in Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, and Mayiladuthurai districts had suffered water stagnation.
