Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi, on Tuesday, paid rich tributes to the police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty, at the Police Memorial on Beach Road on the Police Commemoration Day.
Participating in the programme as the chief guest, Mr. bagchi inspected the ceremonial guard of honour.
Mr. Bagchi recalled the sacrifices made by the police to ensure the safety and peace of the society.
On October 21, 1959, ten CRPF personnel were martyred at Ladakh, defending the nation, and this day has been commemorated as the ‘Police Commemoration Day’ across India ever since.
Mr. Bagchi said that 191 police personnel have sacrificed their lives while on duty across the country in 2025 alone.
Highlighting the measures launched as part of the police reforms, Mr. Bagchi mentioned station modernisation, expansion of CCTV networks, women’s safety through Shakthi app, patrol vehicles, cybercrime control units, drug-free state campaigns, and community policing programmes.
He said that for police welfare, several schemes such as housing, health, police hostels, family welfare funds, and sports and wellness initiatives are being implemented.
“The government is moving towards technology-driven policing with smart policing, digital investigation systems, e-office solutions, and central command and control monitoring centres, he said.
In Visakhapatnam city, annual health check-ups were conducted for nearly 1,600 civil staff, 800 armed reserve personnel, and 1,000 home guards. As part of the next health initiative, CT Coronary Calcium Score Tests are being performed to prevent heart attacks. This move follows concerns about rising heart attacks among police personnel, he said.
Mr. Bagchi said that medical tests were conducted for 1,900 police family members, in collaboration with the King George Hospital (KGH) staff.
For women police welfare, a dedicated Women’s Home was inaugurated on June 20. Housing improvements were carried out in various police quarters at Karasa, Allipuram, III Town, Chinawaltair, with enhanced water supply, streetlighting, CCTV, and drainage repairs. Renovations were completed for various police stations, he said.
The ‘Shaheed Pustak Toli’ team presented Mr. Bagchi a book listing the names of police personnel across the country who were martyred last year. The list was read out at the Police Memorial.
Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao, Principal District & Sessions Judge Ch. Raju, Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad, TDP State president Palla Srinivasa Rao, Visakhapatnam North MLA P. Vishnu Kumar Raju and others were present.
