Three arrested for murdering man in Tiruchi city


Three persons, including two history sheeters, have been arrested on charges of murdering a 33-year-old man and causing multiple stab injuries on the victim’s brother at Periyar Nagar in Gandhi Market police station limits here in the early hours on Monday.

The name of the deceased was given as M. Umashankar alias Appu. His elder brother M. Azhageswaran, 38, is undergoing treatment in a private hospital at Tiruchi. 

Police gave the names of the accused as Manja Velu alias Velu alias Rajadurai, Surya alias Jayasurya – both history sheeters and Mohan. Police sources said Azhageswaran and Umashankar were returning to their home at Varaganeri here in a car in the wee hours on Monday when they were attacked.  The three accused who came on a two-wheeler were apparently under the influence of alcohol.

A quarrel erupted between the brothers and the accused over giving way while travelling on the road. The accused allegedly abused the brothers and attacked them with knives. Umashankar who sustained multiple stab injuries was killed on the spot, while Azhageswaran too suffered multiple injuries on his forehead, ribs and right hand wrist. The three accused were arrested a few hours after the crime was reported. 

Barring Manja Velu, who has been admitted at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital at Tiruchi, the other two accused were remanded in judicial custody. The Gandhi Market police have registered a case of murder, said the sources.
